You Got Roots?! Cool, Let’s Get Talking!

You Got Roots?! Educate. Engage. Advocate.

In a little less than 1 hour AAGSAR’s BlogTalkRadio series, You Got Roots goes live! Wow!:)

With a healthy mix of nervous energy [still figuring out our audio clips!:] and overflowing with PURE excitement [how cool is this?!], we’re gearing-up for AAGSAR: Where African American Genealogy & Smart Technology Connect!

Today’s launch is all about the listening audience getting to know us, the African American Genealogy and Slave Ancestry Research Community (AAGSAR), better and vice-versa. I’m the first to admit this audience complete with its platform and tools are ALL NEW to me! I have 1 whole TEST show under my belt!:)

With all of the amazing opportunities we have before us, we have more than our fair share of challenges. Never has there been a more critical time to talk, connect, build and grow together than now.

And when I say “we”, I’m not just referring to People of Color. I mean WE — people who can find common ground and purpose to advance forward. True progress requires vested effort and community collaboration.

So, what’s on today’s You Got Roots program menu?

  • Welcome and You Got Roots Intros (Luckie Daniels, Host & Bernita Allen, Co-Host)
  • Let’s Talk Interview (Bernita) — What you need to know about Luckie but were afraid to ask!:)

Thanks To You AAGSAR’s #BLOGFEST2014 Was EPIC!:)

Dora KOONCE & son, James HARDY(EN) KOONCEI’d searched ALL DAY for the word to sum up my feelings regarding our first New Year’s #BLOGFEST – We Call Your Name event. Then after the tweets died down and we were all descending from our Ancestors clouds, Bernita (still a NEW KID herself) of Voices Inside My Head nailed it, “BLOGFEST was epic!”.

It was indeed. I’ve never in all my years of researching genealogy, felt more connected to a body of work, than I do today. I never planned on it, have frequently complained about it, and sometimes [almost] get up the nerve to question the Ancestors why they have me doing it. But I know this work is Divine, and I’m so thankful to be a part of bringing not just my, but MANY Ancestors out of the dark. They are SHINING. BREATHING. REJOICING!

I’m hard on you NEW KIDS because I need you to embrace fully the responsibility [and joy] that rests on your shoulders. And should the day come I take hiatus, I want you equipped with EVERYTHING you need to push your Ancestors, and our collective Community FORWARD.

NEW KIDS your work will bloom and spread. Many will follow your lead. If you call them, Ancestors and newly connected Cousins will come (in my best James Earl Jones, Field of Dreams voice). You’ve shifted the landscape and narrative of our genealogy research FOREVER.

I thank you AAGSAR for tolerating, listening to and supporting me. You’ve been the vehicle my Mama sent to keep my heart beating.

Thanks to Kristin of Finding Eliza for penning the BEAUTIFUL Ancestor Homage, We Call Your Name and sister, Pearl CLEAGE for the poem contribution from We Speak Your Names”.

Thanks to the genealogy community for continuing to champion our Ancestor work!:)

If you have ANY doubt about the significance of this time and work, spend a moment reading the We Call Your Name comments and visiting all the remarkable Ancestor Blogs introduced.

A New Year. A Fresh Start. I’m clear now.

No complaining about the weight of the work or worrying about who understands [or supports] the effort. Just enjoying the gift of being able to help descendants and Ancestors find their way, while they help me to find mine.

“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead

Yeah, 2014 is going to be EPIC!:)

Luckie

P.S. Please make sure to visit Ms. Dora and her son James KOONCE via Stones, Rainbows and Doves. Our girl Joanie worked EXTRA hard to afford her Ancestors their rightful time to shine! Well done Joanie!:)

It’s ALL a Leap of Faith! Welcome to AAGSAR!

DREAMFORWARD Inspiration #5Yesterday when Bernita of Voices Inside My Head commented she’d be willing to take a leap of faith in joining our Twitter genealogy community, I responded quickly with the truth:

“The way AAGSAR approaches genealogy research and leverages smart technology has not been done before. It’s ALL a leap of faith! So KEEP FLYING!:)”

I wish I were smart and/or discerning enough to have planned all of this, but I’m not. All I knew in August when I felt the *nudge* was it was time to return to my Ancestor research, and I wanted to help as many researchers as possible progress. That’s how AAGSAR began.

Every time I ask AAGSAR Members to GO HARD — the Ancestors make me reciprocate!:)

I think of the folks who joined AAGSAR steadfast against blogging, who are now among of our shining stars — and teachers! The countless “cousin connections” and DNA analysis we’ve enjoyed. The tremendous amount of teaching, support and real make you lose LOTS of sleep Ancestor work happening in community daily. The community members who QUICKLY stick-up for me when somebody steps out of line and have nicknamed me The Principal. The way EVERYBODY steps-up to give our Newbies what they need to settle in.

We might be virtual but we ARE Family! I’m charged with making sure the needs of our family — and Ancestors — are taken care of. You Got Roots is yet another leap to that end!

New family and friends, You Got Roots should make it easier for those outside AAGSAR’s Facebook Community to connect and keep up with our latest and greatest!:)

So get ready AAGSAR Tribe and friends, 2014 is going to be one heck of a year and we’re no longer flying y’all — we’re SOARING!:)

Happy New Year Family!
