Sankofa symbolism of a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back derives from the Akan People of Ghana.
Sankofa’s meaning, taking what is good from our past, bringing it into the present and applying its knowledge to grow and progress positively.
Restoring, documenting, and preserving our African American Ancestors legacy is not only an act of reverence, it’s one of spiritual healing and cultural restoration for us, their descendants.
For many of our Ancestors, having their names called lovingly and stories shared is the first taste of true freedom they’ve ever experienced.
African American Genealogy and Slave Ancestry Research is committed to supporting the historical research and digital preservation efforts of Ancestors who have been denied a voice for far too long. Their names, stories and history must be recovered.
We have The Gift. We have the tools. We have the knowledge.
Sankofa. Go back to fetch it!
